Banns of Marriage
  • Where a marriage is planned and Banns of Marriage are to be called (rather than by Licence) the couple concerned must deliver (or cause to be delivered) a Notice IN WRITING at least 7 days before Banns need to start being called.
The Notice must be dated and include the following information:
    • The full christian name(s) and surname of both parties to the intended marriage (including any other name by which they have been known within recent years)
    • The full address at which each of them is resident and the date since which they have been so resident.
    • Details of their respective status: single / previous marriage dissolved / widow(er)
  • Full contact details - address, phone and or email - should be included to allow for verification or clarification.
  • No clergy are bound to publish Banns until such Notice has been given.
  • Where Banns are called in respect of a Marriage at another church the Minister shall not conduct the Marriage unless a duly signed certificate of the publication of Banns has been delivered to him/her.
  • Banns are only valid for three months from when they are published.
  • Where either party holds any non-EU and non-Commonwealth or USA nationality then Banns will not be an appropriate preliminary to marriage - advice regarding a Licence should be sought.
