Collections
1660-63, 1674-77 & 1687-89
These collections were largely the response of the parish to the
"Church Briefs." The briefs were letters patent, issued by the Crown,
and directed to be read in all the Churches, within a certain
defined area, in favour of petitioners whose needs were very urgent,
and who had influence in high places. Fifty-one such were issued
in the year 1661-2 and Pepys had perhaps reason to complain,
"To Church, where we observe the trade of briefs now come up
to so constant a course every Sunday, that we resolve to give
no more to them." [cf Dibden parish website]
