A 'pelican' style 'lectern' - in All Saints Church, Newchurch,
Isle of Wight
Intriguingly this does not appear to have been used as a Lectern at
St John's but rather to have been part of an altar piece in the Chancel
and probably dates from about 1730: It was known to be over 150 years old when
taken to Newchurch in 1883.
An inscription at Newchurch describes it as having been part of the
baldachin:
"To the glory of God. This pelican and her piety surmounted the baldachino of the
parish church, Frome, Somersetshire for one hundred and fifty years. It was presented to All
Saints newchurch by Mrs A Dickens and Mrs H A Wooldries in 1883.",
whilst Nightingale in 1819
notes that
"The altar piece is placed in a beautiful oval window and represents a female pelican,
with three young ones under it, all superbly gilt."
