Frome St John the Baptist

The Parish Church of St John the Baptist at Frome is of ancient foundation dating back to an original church founded by St Aldhelm about 685AD.
The saxon church survived until the C12 but was replaced towards the end of that century. The norman building grew with the addition of chantry chapels and by the early C15 reached its present size following the substantial westward extension of the nave.
Numerous internal reorderings have taken place through the centuries. There was a major restoration through the 1850's and 1860's guided by Revd W J E Bennett, a noted Anglo-Catholic.
The most recent works of restoration have included:
  • 2003: The renewal of the Chancel and Ken Chapel roofs: £165,000
  • 2004: The renewal of the North Aisle roof: £110,000
  • 2005: Safety work on West window: £10,000
  • 2006: Conservation work on Ken Chapel and Lady Chapel windows: £25,000
  • Work planned:
    • Restoration of Via Crucis
    • Structural work in NE corner of Lady Chapel
    • Renewal of West window
    • Repairs to Vestry steps
    • Levelling of Access at West Porches
The work of Restoration is very expensive and support is given through the 'St John's Restoration Fund' which is a registered charity. Donations are always welcome!
